THE CAUSE
Did you know that there are an estimated 43 million at-risk children living in Latin America alone?
Over four decades of civil war in Colombia has left more than 4.5 million people displaced, the majority of whom are women and children. Many of these children are street kids, spending their entire childhoods living and working on the streets. Others return 'home' to violent and abusive parents. Up to 20,000 children, many under 14 years of age, are enrolled in revolutionary armed groups in Colombia, and recruitment of children and adolescents continues.
Fresh Wind Children's Foundation in Medellin, Colombia, directed by Wauwatosa natives Tom and Jennifer Atwater, is addressing this problem on many fronts. The Foundation currently serve 175 children and their families who are at high risk due to the prevalence of drugs, violence, prostitution and intense poverty in the neighborhood.
At Fresh Wind Foundation, over 5000 meals are served monthly, battling the malnutrition and subsequent disease that threaten these children. Addressing the needs of parents and families, the Foundation works in conjunction with the local church and community leaders, providing discipleship classes for the parents, as well as literacy and skills training.
The Foundation is also a fully functioning preschool, meeting top-quality educational standards, where children are taught not only sound Biblical principles and values, but also to have a personal relationship and connect with their heavenly Father.
This is the only care center in the neighborhood to provide full day care for babies and after-school care for elementary aged children -- care that is crucial to getting the children a good start academically, nutritionally and spiritually. Keeping them off the street during the day, the Foundation provides them with a safe place and refuge from neglect, human trafficking, exploitation and abuse by sexual predators, local gangs and mafia.
The Colombia Hunger Project Run/Walk has been founded as an annual race to help feed the hungry children in Medellin. The proceeds from the event will be used to cover the monthly cost of $4,000 USD to feed our 175 children 2.5 nutritious meals daily.
Loving the 'whole person' often begins with addressing physical needs. Hungry children have trouble functioning, learning and growing. We invite you to make a lasting difference in the lives of these children!
